From Compaction to Smooth Finishes: An On-Site Case Study with Conplant

Working on a highway upgrade on behalf of Main Roads WA, Garli needed a fleet of heavy-duty equipment for successful compaction. Conplant got the call-up and delivered.

We came onboard with Garli back in January 2023, with the first rollers arriving onsite in March. The Bindoon North site is located 84 km (1.5 hours) north of Perth. All equipment was floated to site, with a peak usage of 10 rollers at one time.

Project dates: March 2023 – May 2024

The Project

Bindoon North is a highway upgrade project, with the objective to widen and realign a section of the Great Northern Highway in Western Australia. The project involved a combination of off-road works and online upgrades to be carried out under traffic management.

As a road building project, this phase included standard compaction solutions for earthworks and highway construction. The earthworks kicked off primarily with the use of Smooth Drum and Padfoot vibrating single drum rollers, followed by Multi Tyred rollers to provide the finishing touches.

With the main challenge being the relatively remote location – as well as work in progress 7 days a week – Conplant ensured there were always servicing staff on call. This would either be Conplant’s own in-house teams or local contractors who were based closer to the site for quicker response time.

About Garli

Garli is a successful, indigenous-owned and operated business founded in 2018. Since then, it’s evolved into a highly prosperous civil construction and contracting company.

Apart from operating as a successful civil construction and contracting business, the founders of Garli, Darren Lundberg and Michael Barlow, are committed to nurturing Aboriginal employees and contractors and enabling them to grow their capacity through exposure, training, mentoring and other opportunities.

“We used Conplant due to their wide variety of equipment and servicing on demand. Bonnie, Kerry, and the on-site mechanics have been really good. Always available when we need them, even on weekends.”

The Solution

In total, Conplant fulfilled 25 equipment orders, with a peak of 10 rollers active onsite at any one time. This included a variety of Smooth Drum, Padfoot, and Multi Tyre compaction rollers.
